The preset overcast (over-edge) stitch combined with the over-edge presser foot helps mimic an edge obtained when using an overlock machine. The foot makes lining up fabric easier, and the preset stitch catches thread just off fabric edge, wrapping it to some degree. For occasional mending, this combo (stitch and presser foot) are terrific.

After using a cheaper, non-Singer overcast foot, which broke in the middle of a project, I have learned my lesson. Worth every single penny, this foot just mowed through miles of heavy-duty use on some a large project made with heavy denim. It worked like a champ, and it has changed my sewing life. I will never go the cheap route again.
