It's fun, educational and unique! My 10-yr old nephew had to use a small hammer to actually get anywhere, and I'm not sure that is the point...?! The kit comes with a print out of lots of facts about the planet and the stones you'll reveal. The stones themselves are pretty small, about the size of a nickel. They are super cute though. This would be fun for any youngin' wanting to spend some time to find treasure while also learning a bit about the solar system and it's planets. It does come with a small brush and wooden stick to help dig. Maybe he'll be Indiana Jones someday!! Anyway, definitely do it on a pan or some newspaper as it's quite messy, and chalk-like substance will get everywhere.

My son loves science and anything that involves digging up treasures. Easy to use and he had a blast. This would make a great gift.

This kit was smaller than expected- but has a decent amount of items inside. Contains the standard tools to break items free. Was softer than some other digs we've done, so that was a plus. Definitely didn't really look like the planet we ordered (Jupiter) but the box was exciting because it was his favorite planet. The gems inside are small and pretty standard for these types of kits. Overall if you have kids who've done dig sets before, I'd pass on this one for something larger or with better quality items inside.

I got this Cosmic Dig Kit for my 9-year-old son's Easter basket. He's tried other dig kits and likes them. I chose Mercury based on the rocks and minerals shown in the listing, so I was hoping those would be the ones included rather than a random selection. Otherwise, I would have gone with Mars.It turns out that they are the same ones pictured, and details about each of the 5 are given on the back of the educational poster about the planet (see photo). I would have preferred a real stone rather than the pretend "red diamond." The others will be good additions to his collection. Also included are the planet with hidden gems inside, a chisel, brush, and a magnet that can be used along with a circular cardboard badge that can be popped out of the top of the box. The tools are pretty small. The planet isn't as detailed as the image on the box but looks nice. Overall, I like it and think it is a good value.

This review is for the Neptune cosmic dig kit. Overall, by 9yo enjoyed the activity, but for reasons I'll explain below, I think the target group for this should be kids 4-8.What's in the box: You get the planet, a small chisel, a small brush, a two-sided poster, and a magnet you can affix to a "badge." The badge is a circular cutout of the planet at the top of the box. On one side of the poster, it has a picture and lists facts about the planet. On the other side are instructions and details about the rocks inside.Accuracy of product photos: Ours did not look like Neptune, nor any known planet or moon in the solar system. It looked like a white ball that got a short burst from a few different spray paints. Inside, it was a white and chalk-like (product photos show a sand color). I think sand color would have been perfect since the plaster was fairly soft. That's why I also think this product should be marketed to younger kids. Other plaster dig sets tend to be harder to break apart, but this one was fairly easy in comparison.Specimen sizes: the specimens are about 1/2 inch in size. My kiddo was hoping for bigger, but this isn't their first plaster dig set. The actual specimens are still nice. They're polished, not rough stone. What my kid didn't like was the plastic "fake diamond." In part, because four stones were uncovered next to each other right at the start. We had to meticulously break apart the globe only to get a piece of plastic. My kiddo saw it and then flicked it. It would have been much, much better if it were made of glass or quartz. I think younger kids would still be absolutely thrilled by it, though.I recommend this set for ages 4-8, or as an introductory set for those who haven't done anything like this before. If your kiddo has, or if they're near the 10+ age group, there are other sets. One star off for product not matching photos.

This dog kit is on the smaller size and priced accordingly. It is good to take with you on a vacation to have something fun for your kid to get into. You can spread out a plastic tablecloth or have them do it in the bathtub for easy clean up. My 6 year old liked it and it was easy for her to use. I would purchase the other planets as well.
