🌿 Wyrd Plant Co. Care Card
🌞 Light: Bright, indirect or filtered light is ideal for maintaining compact growth and developing the spectacular metallic coloration of Begonia ‘Dejah Thoris.’ Avoid prolonged direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate foliage.
💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the upper portion of the soil begins to feel slightly dry. Allow excess water to drain completely and avoid keeping the growing medium constantly saturated. Rex Begonias appreciate consistent moisture but are susceptible to root and rhizome problems when kept too wet.
💦 Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally around 50 to 70%. Higher humidity can encourage lush foliage, but good airflow is equally important. Avoid allowing water to remain on the leaves for extended periods.
🌡️ Temperature: Thrives in warm household temperatures around 65 to 80°F (18 to 27°C). Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
🌱 Soil: A loose, airy, well-draining mix is ideal. A blend containing quality potting soil, orchid bark, perlite, and horticultural charcoal provides moisture retention while allowing plenty of oxygen around the roots.
🌿 Fertilizer: Feed monthly during active growth with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding during periods of slower growth.
🐾 Pet Safety: Not considered pet safe if ingested. Begonias contain calcium oxalates and should be kept away from pets and small children.
🌎 Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
🌿 About This Plant
Begonia ‘Dejah Thoris’ is an extraordinary Rex Begonia prized for foliage that seems almost metallic.
Young leaves emerge in beautiful rosy-pink and bronze tones before gradually developing their characteristic silvery coloration as they mature. Fully developed leaves can become heavily washed in shimmering silver, accented by dark green to charcoal markings and subtle pink, rose, and burgundy tones.
The heavily textured foliage, serrated margins, and metallic finish give each leaf remarkable dimension. Depending on the angle and lighting, the leaves can appear silver, pewter, lavender, or softly pink.
Introduced in 2001, ‘Dejah Thoris’ was named after the Princess of Mars from the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs, an appropriately otherworldly name for a Begonia that looks like it belongs on another planet.
As the plant matures, its rhizomatous growth produces additional foliage and develops into a dramatic mound of shimmering leaves.
