Legends
Legend 1
In ancient times, there lived a beautiful girl in Provence. One day, she was alone in a cold valley picking budding flowers. On her way home, she met an injured traveler from afar who asked her for directions.
Holding a bouquet full of flowers, the girl looked affectionately at the handsome young man.In that instant, her heart was captured by his warm and unrestrained smile.Despite her family’s objections, she insisted on letting the young man stay in her home to recover from his wounds.
As days went by, the young man’s leg injury healed, and the affection between them grew rapidly. On a slightly cool morning, the young man prepared to leave. The girl was determined to follow him far away to his hometown full of roses, regardless of her family’s opposition.
Before the girl left, an old granny in the village held a bunch of newly bloomed lavender and told the lovestruck girl to test the young man’s sincerity with these fresh lavender flowers. It was said that the fragrance of lavender could reveal unfaithful hearts.
On that lavender-blooming morning in the valley, just as the young man took the girl’s hand ready to depart, the girl threw the bunch of lavender hidden inside her coat at him.At once, a wisp of purple smoke swirled and drifted away.
A chilly wind whistled faintly in the valley, as if the young man was whispering:
"I am the heart that yearns to wander far with you."
Leaving only the lonely girl, lost in sorrow. Before long, the girl vanished too. Some said she had followed the scent of flowers to search for him; others claimed she had also turned into a wisp of smoke with the young man and disappeared in the valley.
The appearance of this flower represents love and promise, just like its flower language - waiting for love.
Legend 2
It is said that one day, the Virgin Mary hung the freshly washed infant clothes of Jesus on lavender.Since then, lavender has been endowed with the meaning of symbolizing the scent of heaven.
Others say the Virgin Mary directly washed Jesus’ infant clothes with water steeped in lavender - perhaps this is why people in the past loved to use lavender to wash clothes.
There is also a saying that the Virgin Mary once prayed over lavender, so it not only retains a long-lasting fragrance but also has the power to drive away evil spirits.
People named that plant "Lavender".
