Belafonte was an activist, singer, and performer from America. He popularized the Jamaican mento folk songs that were marketed to a worldwide audience in the 1950s as Trinbagonian Calypso music. He was the most well-known Caribbean-American pop performer of his day.
Belafonte was placed on the blacklist during the McCarthy period, along with several other civil rights advocates. He gathered $50,000 to free fellow civil rights protestors during the 1963 Birmingham Campaign and freed Martin Luther King Jr from Birmingham City Jail.
