Is there research that shows your hair will grow if you massage it for two hours a day, probably… but if we think about it, if you do anything for two hours a day, you will experience growth whether it’s studying a language, working out, investing… I grew my hair to tailbone length without 2hr daily massages or fancy oils/butters, and I have type 4C hair that never grew past my shoulders before I had sisterlocks. Since getting sisterlocks, I have used MINIMAL products (almost no oils, barely any sprays) and my hair has grown longer than it’s ever been. Recently, I started Sebum conditioning my hair with the water-only method using a handheld scalp massager. It’s only been a short time but I love how healthy and clean my scalp has been and I’m curious to see the increase in fullness on my scalp over time. I only spend about 5-10 minutes massaging in the shower daily. So, will massaging your scalp stimulate growth? Absolutely! Do you need to dedicate 2 hours of your life to it when you could be doing so many other things? I would say NO. Massaging with fingers or even machines isn’t the best way to actually reach your scalp or release the Sebum produced there. I remember my mom was really into the OG natural hair online community when I was a kid in the 2000s and she bought EVERY single product, butter, oil. Especially in our community, we need to be wary of any advice that calls for us to take extreme action just to have a relatively normal outcome.
