Introduction

A SURFboard cable modem is an ARRIS DOCSIS box, not a surfboard and not an HDMI dongle. Standalone S33 and S34 units need a separate router. G-series boxes add Wi-Fi. Speeds only match if your ISP approved that model for your plan. DOCSIS 3.1 is the current retail line; older 3.0 units cap lower. Voice jacks are rare on these retail SKUs.

  • Modem-only S33/S34 versus G-series modem-router
  • DOCSIS 3.1 with 2.5 GbE versus a 1 GbE 3.0 leftover
  • ISP-approved list versus an unlocked box your cable co will not provision

Check Xfinity, Spectrum, or compatibility, then match Ethernet speed to your plan. Fiber and will not talk to this F-connector.

FAQs

Yes for S33, S34, and SB8200 modem-only boxes. They have Ethernet, not whole-home Wi-Fi. G-series units include a Wi-Fi router. If you already own a mesh system, a modem-only SKU is cleaner. If you want one box, shop G34, G36, or G54 and still confirm the ISP list.

DOCSIS 3.1 is what current gigabit cable plans expect. 3.0 modems with 32×8 channels lag on multi-gig tiers. SURFboard's S and G retail lines are 3.1. If a used SB6183 shows up, it is the older generation. Match the modem to the plan speed, not a 2016 forum post.

Only if the exact model is on that ISP's approved-modem list. Xfinity, Spectrum, and each publish one. Activation still happens in their app after you connect coax. A retail box is not a magic bypass. Fiber, , and 5G home internet use different hardware.

S33 and S34 are modem-only with a 2.5 GbE port for faster plans; S34 stresses newer upload tiers. G combos add Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 and extra LAN ports. Combos cost more and age with Wi-Fi. Pick modem-only if you like your current router.

Most current SURFboard retail modems are data-only. If you still pay for cable voice, you need a model with an eMTA phone jack, which these S and G pages generally are not. Check the spec for voice. An extra Ethernet port is not a telephone line.
