Decor

Home decor centered on posters and prints, sized to the wall and furniture they hang above in living rooms and bedrooms.

Introduction

Decor works in layers: something on the wall, something on a surface and something soft. Prints and posters are the easiest wall layer to change with the seasons, so start there and let smaller pieces repeat their colors.

  • Scale: art above a sofa or bed looks balanced at about two-thirds of the furniture's width.
  • Height: hang the center of a print near eye level, roughly 57 to 60 inches from the floor.
  • Color: pull one accent color from the print into a pillow, vase or throw.

Swap prints in the same frames when you want a new look without new holes in the wall.

FAQs

Aim for art that spans about two-thirds of the sofa's width, either as one large print or a grouping. For an 84-inch sofa, that is roughly 56 inches of art including the space between frames.

Groups of three or five pieces at different heights look more natural than an even row. Leave some empty space on each shelf so books and objects do not crowd the back wall.

Lay the frames on the floor first and keep 2 to 3 inches between them. Trace each frame on paper, tape the outlines to the wall and adjust the layout before putting in any nails.

Pick one main color from something that stays, such as the sofa or rug, and one accent color for smaller pieces. Prints are the easiest place to bring in the accent, since they are simple to swap later.

Keep neutral frames, vases and baskets year-round and change only the prints, pillow covers and a few small objects. Store the seasonal set in one labeled bin so it comes out ready next year.
