Kyanite is an aluminum silicate mineral (Al2SiO5) that forms in blade-like, elongated crystal structures as a result of high-pressure metamorphic processes. Kyanite has an unusual physical property called anisotropic hardness: its hardness measures approximately 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs scale along the length of the blade, but 6.5 to 7 across the blade, meaning it is easier to split or scratch in one direction than the other.
