According to Wikipedia “Medusa lived & died in Libya”. They also admitted that her myth was first apart of the Berber(Moorish) Religion. But, according to African tradition Medusa meant “Wisdom”. Unlike in western culture, snakes denoted a high level of occult knowledge. Snakes were only dangerous to the uninitiated or ignorant. But, even Moses from who grew up as an Egyptian used snakes in as a sign of higher consciousness:

Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they were healed.

Within African myth Medusa was a talk beautiful warrior goddess with locs. Who only sacred the her enemies with Mask paint in menstrual blood.

 But, in reality this myth stems back to the warrior Goddesses of Kush(morden day Ethiopia), called Candance’s(Kandake), meaning Queen Mother. It wasn’t one women. It was an alliance’s of women who ruled. Side note: in Marvel they are known as Wonder Woman and the Amazon’s. 

But After Alexander The Great conquered Egypt he set his eyes on Kush. But after a brief battle Alexander was defeated by the Candance’s of Ethiopia. After Alexander’s defeat he engraved the image of Medusa on his shield as a tribute.
